We LOVE Sun and Water
On both sides of each new day, water and light are doing their eternal dance across the 831. Sometimes the water shows up as morning fog, marine layer, drifting clouds, or soft rain, while the sun cuts through it — refracting, glowing, and warming everything it touches. We all chase that golden warmth. Many of us live for the ever-changing sky as the light shifts from soft pastels to fiery oranges and deep purples.
Water vapor, evaporates, rises and drifts across the earth in endless cycles. Every single day delivers a fresh mix of sun and sea. Capturing these moments is pure art. Local legend Aaron Chang remains one of the best at freezing that magic where light meets water along our coast.
The Monterey Bay Vibe
Most of the 8 3 1 wraps around Monterey Bay — a special place shaped by one of the deepest underwater canyons on the West Coast. The sun warms the surface water, creating fog and low clouds while cold, nutrient-rich water wells up from the depths. That upwelling nutrient rich water feeds the marine life explosion we’re so lucky to have here. Summer heat inland pulls cool ocean air across the bay, allowing the marine layer to cool the coast and water the mountains
All this heat exchange brings wind, waves, and those sunsets that make you pull the car over. The sun’s energy is constantly moving massive bodies of air and water, painting our coastline in ever-changing beauty.
We Love the Sun
Cruising the big “C” curve of Monterey Bay gives you endless vantage points for sunrise and sunset chasing. With a little planning you can set yourself up for shows that stop you in your tracks:
- West-facing coastline = epic ocean sunsets
- South-facing spots = beautiful sunrises
- Big Sur’s wild coastline = dramatic views year-round
- North of Santa Cruz toward San Mateo = more killer sunsets
Check the clock, load up snacks, warm layers, and drinks, then head to your favorite vista. Also, sheck the tide charts, be careful of high tides with big surf. California has a long history people getting hurt or killed from not being safe near the water.
Pro tip: All Powers portable power stations and solar panels keep your cameras, phones, and lights running long after the sun dips.
Some evenings the community gathers for something deeper. One hour before sunset at Moran Lake , our local Kim Molloy blends light, water, and crystal bowl sounds. The Crystal Sound Bowls harmonize with the ocean waves, lifting the energy, bringing real peace and connection.
We Love the Water
For generations, humans followed the rivers and coastlines just like the animals. Coastal villages fished, traded, and thrived along the waterways — many still do today. When we settled into farming, we learned to dam, channel, irrigate, and pull energy from moving water.
Locally, Swim Outlet in Campbell (just over the hill) has everything you need for ocean dips, pool sessions, and river adventures.
Why Do We Love Both?
In our modern world we’re still deeply dependent on sun and water. But why do waterfront sunny places pull on us so strongly?
Local marine biologist Dr. Wallace J. Nichols has been studying exactly this. His “Blue Mind” research shows how being near water calms our nervous system, sparks creativity, and boosts overall well-being. Highly recommend his books — he puts into words what we all feel when we’re standing at the edge of the Pacific with the sun on our faces.
Why We Need Both
The sun has been humanity’s most reliable rhythm-keeper. It drives the water cycle, disinfects, powers evaporation, and helps fill our aquifers with clean, mineral-rich water. It also triggers our bodies to produce vitamin D, which supports a huge range of vital processes. Keep your bodies extremities warm and cosy with The Australian LUXE Collection.
Help the Earth
Caring for our sun, water, and the places where they meet is caring for ourselves and the generations after us. Reduce single-use plastic, support marine protection efforts, pick up beach trash when you’re out, and stay mindful of water and energy use. Help re-plant all the burnt forests, plants naturally consume carbon dioxide and makes clean oxygen.
The 8 3 1 beauty is powerful — but it’s also fragile. Let’s keep showing up, taking photos, gathering for sunsets, and protecting what makes this place feel like home.
What’s your favorite sun + water spot in the 8 3 1 right now? Drop it in the comments — I’d love to check it out and maybe feature it in the next Vibe Check.
Until next time, keep chasing the light. 🌊☀️
